Blackhawk Network (previously Didix) has a huge range of gift cards, such as Restaurantcadeaukaart and BioscoopCadeau, RestaurantChoice (in the UK) and RestaurantGeschenk (in Germany). Each brand has its own website, where customers can buy the gift cards through the e-commerce checkout. The recipients of the cards can check and redeem the balance online. Fortunately, the system developed by rb2 is ready to process the large number of transactions (incoming and outgoing) safely and quickly.

Our challenge
Especially around the holidays, Blackhawk Network websites are overloaded. Half of Europe buys the gift cards, while the other half receives them and wants to find out online what Santa has given them.Together with Blackhawk Network, rb2 has set up a system that focusses on performance and extremely good logging. This is possible by using the Elastic Stack (Elastic Search, Kibana, etc.).
Our approach
Blackhawk Network needed a lot of functionalities that aren't readily available in most e-commerce systems.With the help of our Scrum team, we have built a so-called bank application for managing and issuing gift cards. There is also a large Merchant module containing all of the locations where cards can be redeemed.We combined these systems into a super-fast API that provides content to all Blackhawk Network gift card websites.
